Protesting Farmer Warns of Asbestos Danger: “Hold your breath for the next two kilometers”

David Mansfield has taken the government of the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) to court, after the state approved a basalt quarry near property he owns.

He has launched an appeal in the Land and Environment Court against the Minister for Planning and the Hanson Construction Materials, the company that looks to mine basalt. He says the approval for the quarry was rushed and that an investigation into the presence of asbestos was not done before approval of the development.

The basalt mine sits on top of a former asbestos mine site and Mansfield believes that new mining operation will release asbestos fibers into the air. This will put his family, livestock and passing motorists at risk of asbestos exposure.
